Ruqyah is commonly translated in English as "incantation" which carries a negative meaning since the word incantation is usually associated with magic, spells, and witchcraft. However, Ruqyah in Islam is the recitation of Qur’an seeking refuge, remembrance, and supplications that are used to treat sicknesses and other problems. Ruqyah falls into two categories:

• Ruqyah Ash Shar’eeya
• Ruqyah Ash Shirkiyah

Ar-Ruqyah Ash Shar’eeyah mentioned above has three conditions for it to be permissible:

1. It must be with the speech of Allah (Qur’aan) and his names and attributes.
2. It must be in Arabic or its known meaning in other languages.
3. To believe that Ruqyah's benefit originates from Allah.
This type of Ruqyah is permissible and is the subject of focus here. Ar-Ruqyah Ash Shirkiyah contradicts the conditions of Ar-Ruqyah Ash Shar’eeyah and involves Shirk which leads to destruction in this life and the next. This type includes practices like Magic, Fortune telling, Horoscopes, superstitious beliefs, and charms. The treatment of Ruqyah requires certain conditions: The person must have the right belief in Allah. Sincerity in worshipping Allah and treating others. Firm obedience to Allah and staying away from what is forbidden. Avoiding unlawful places or situations that lead to wrongdoing. Safeguarding patient affairs and keeping their secrets. Spreading awareness of the religion of Allah and advising patients on His commandments. Holding knowledge about the patient's condition and illnesses. Having awareness about Jinns to ensure safety while treating patients. Ibn Teen mentioned that treatments like Muawwizaat are effective for the soul if uttered by the righteous. The person receiving Ruqyah must believe that both harm and benefit come from Allah. They must practice patience. Conditions for Ruqyah Ash Shar’eeyah are: The recitation must include the speech of Allah, His names and attributes, or His Messenger. It must be in Arabic or its known meaning in other languages. The belief that Ruqyah itself does not heal but Allah provides the cure. Avoid reciting Ruqyah while in a state of major impurity or at unsuitable locations for worship like graveyards or bathrooms.
